Elias is taken by surface scavengers and interrogated by their warlord, Revenux. He offers them something none of them can refuse — and then the sky opens. Aboard the destroyer VALKYRIE, Commander Arthur gives an order that would erase the entire sector. His lieutenant talks him out of it with cold arithmetic. What he orders instead is worse.
