Leaving the Cursed Well, Mara carries the coin through Boneveil forest while Kael hides a worsening grave-wolf wound. Liora guides them toward the shrine, but the coin warms whenever Bloodfang riders draw near. Mara tends Kael rather than run ahead, and he admits that protecting her has become more than duty. She answers that wanting him frightens her because every clan turns love into a chain. Kael promises to follow her choice, not replace it. They kiss beside the boundary stones. Then Liora sees Dain's hunters circling the only road to Boneveil, and the three must run together before moonrise.
